and Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets are, from 1 April, working
together as NHS East London and the City.Staff in these three high
performing primary care trusts have joined forces to improve health
and health services for local people, to work in partnership with
local authorities, and to support the development of GP
commissioning consortia. We have a single board which is accountable
for ensuring the responsibilities of our three primary care trusts
are carried out during this time of change across the NHS.
What we
do
The main functions of NHS East London and the
City are:
- Primary care commissioning
commissions services for local people from general practitioners,
pharmacists, dentists and optometrists. Steve Gilvin is
director of primary care commissioning.
- The commissioning support
service, working with GPs, comissions
hospital and mental health services for local people, providing
support to GP commissioning consortia. Andrew Ridley is managing
director of the commissioning support service.
- Public health provides
leadership and advice on health improvement and the reduction of
health inequalities. We assess local health needs, consider public
health issues and work to improve the health of the community. This
is done in partnership with local authorities and community
organisations. We are working with local authorities and GPs to
shape the future of this function. NHS East London and the
City director of public health is Dr Ian Basnett, who works with
directors of public health for the City and Hackney, Newham and
Tower Hamlets.
