Disability Two Ticks
Improving opportunities for people with disabilities has been a
challenging area for the Trust for a number of reasons but largely
due to the physical access and limitations of some Trust sites.
Nonetheless, it is an area where we have made a great deal of
progress and will continue to work hard in order to achieve our
commitments.
The positive about disability ‘two ticks’ symbol was awarded to
the Trust in 2004 and following a recent review, we have been
permitted to continue using this symbol. The symbol is awarded to
organisations that can adhere to 5 specific commitments and need to
be able to demonstrate the progress made each year. The 5
commitments are:
- To interview all applicants with a disability who meet the
minimum criteria for a job vacancy and consider them on their
abilities.
- To ensure there is a mechanism in place, at any time but at
least once a year, with disabled employees to discuss what you and
they can do to make sure they can develop and use their
abilities.
- To make every effort when employees become disabled to make
sure they stay in employment.
- To take action to ensure that all employees develop appropriate
level of disability awareness needed to make sure these commitments
work.
- Each year to review the five commitments and what has been
achieved, to plan ways to improve on them and let employees and the
Employment Service know about progress and future plans
We see many benefits to being an accredited ‘two ticks symbol’
user including:
- Demonstrating publicly that we welcome applications from people
with disabilities and will focus on their abilities rather than
disabilities.
- That we are making a commitment to retain staff who may become
disabled during the course of their employment.
- That we are proactive in making our workforce more
representative of the community we serve.
