Health Hero Bee Loh

Question & Answer Session

Q       What do you do to stay fit?

A       I do Wing Chun Martial arts for self defence and for energy. I’ve been doing it since 1980 and I’m still learning, refining my skills and deepening my knowledge. I also do Chi Kung for health.

Q       Why is exercise important to you?

A       I used to be a nurse in the NHS but I began to have health problems like migraine, back pain, sinusitis, and a knee injury due to training. I knew I had to find an answer that didn’t involve medicine and that’s what the Chi Kung exercises did for me. It helped me heal myself. And with our population becoming older we need ways to take care of our own health, so now I teach Chi Kung to others.

Q       How often do you exercise?

A        Every single day. They say that if you forget to do Wing Chung for one day, it forgets you for two days. And doing Chi Kung is like taking vitamin C every day for your health.

Q       Did anyone inspire you to take up regular exercise?

A       I was looking for answers to my problems when I came across Wing Chun. It was created by a Buddhist nun - so maybe she inspired me.

Q       How do you motivate yourself to exercise?

A       To stay motivated takes discipline, passion and dedication. I knew, from my nursing background, that my migraines would weaken the veins in my head and eventually I could end up with a stroke. So that’s why I turned to Chi Kung. You can rely on the NHS to help you  with all their skills, knowledge, experience and machines. But at the end of the day you are the one who is suffering.

Q       What would you say to someone who was interested in taking up regular exercise?

A       The only way to experience the benefits of exercise is to do it for yourself.
