Sickle cell and thalassaemia service

Sickle Cell

The sickle cell and thalassaemia team offers a pan-Hackney service to individuals at risk of having sickle cell disease, beta thalassaemia major and other major haemoglobinopathies. Any individuals wanting to ascertain their sickle cell/thalassaemia status can walk in to the centre and request counselling and screening. Not only do we work locally, we are seen as a national resource.

Services

  • Provide a targeted service to all newborn babies through screening for sickle cell, thalassaemia and other related red blood cell types
  • Provide training, education and support to targeted groups caring for or involved in care and management of individuals with sickle cell and thalassaemia
  • Work in partnership with other disciplines to increase health promotion/education about sickle cell and thalassaemia to the general public.
  • Be a source of expertise and advice to healthcare professionals locally and nationally in relation to sickle cell and thalassaemia

Referrals

Referrals can be made by secondary and primary care, voluntary and statutory organisations and carers. Patients may also self refer.
