Speech and Language Therapy  is an integrated service across the PCT and the Learning Trust.  The service is offered to children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), and eating and drinking difficulties, that are resident in or at school in Hackney and the City.

The service is managed in three geographically organised teams based at John Scott Health Centre, the Learning Trust and Hackney Ark.

Early Years

The team works in several contexts:

  • Each children's centre has two SLT staff working directly from the children’s centre base, working as an integral part of each local team
  • The child development centre, the Hackney Ark, provides assessment and intervention as part of the multi-disciplinary/ agency team
  • Some in-reach work into NICU in Homerton Hospital
  • Home visits can be arranged if required

Primary schools

The team works in several contexts:

  • Every mainstream primary school has an allocated SLT working in school for 1-2 days per week half on/off
  • Designated sessions, as part of the school-based team, are provided weekly to two language resource bases and for children with specific language impairments in mainstream schools
  • Designated sessions, as part of the school-based team, are also provided weekly to two Autism Resource Bases and for children with a diagnosis of autism placed in mainstream school

Secondary schools

The team works in several contexts:

  • A small core service provides training and project work to secondary schools and academies
  • A number of schools buy-in additional negotiated sessions

Special schools

Designated sessions are provided weekly with SLT s working as part of the school teams.

Services

  • Provide prevention, health promotion and training packages to children, families and the wider children’s workforce in the environment and context most suitable to them.  Holistic, ‘whole school and setting’ approaches are designed to support the child in his/her daily placement.
  • Provide assessment to all children referred – with either unitary SLCN needs or where this need is part of more complex needs.  Assessment will be offered in the environment most suitable to the child and family with emphasis on multi-disciplinary / agency working where appropriate.
  • Provide intervention packages designed to meet the needs of the caseload and individual child, in the right context and involving the team around every child.

Referrals

Referrals can be made by anyone. Parents with concerns regarding pre-school children can also drop in to a number of “Talking Walk-in” sessions around the borough; no referral is required for these.  These are held in each children's centre area every month; your children's centre, health visitor and GP will hold details. Referrals for school-aged children can be made directly to the service or through the SENCo in the child’s school.  A named SLT is allocated to every maintained school.

For further information on how, when and why to refer, please contact our dedicated telephone line 0207 683 4587 or email sltinfo@chpct.nhs.uk
