Bilingual health advocacy

Our service provides bilingual advocates and interpreters for
patients, including refugees and asylum seekers, whose first
language is not English. We aim to improve access to primary care
health services and information about these services by breaking
down barriers such as differences in language, culture and
religion.
Our aim is to provide an advocate, but where this is not
possible we will provide an interpreter instead.
There is a difference:
- An interpreter will interpret for the patient and the health
professional to ensure that they can both understand and
communicate with each other via a common language.
- An advocate will also interpret, but in addition will support
patients ensuring they have the knowledge, understanding and
confidence needed to make informed decisions and to get the care
and services they need. They will also refer them to other
organisations that can assist them.
