Occupational therapy

Speech and Language

The children’s occupational therapy service is an integrated service supported with funding from partner agencies. The service offers individual or group treatment for children with difficulties with every day activities such as dressing, bathing, toileting, handwriting, feeding, manipulating play activities/ toys. Also, children with a range of diagnoses including extreme prematurity, physical disability, co-ordination disorders, learning disabilities or an autistic spectrum disorder which may cause these difficulties will also be seen by the service.

 

Services

  • Provide assessment and treatment of children with physical disabilities and delay to maximise independence and safety in everyday activities
  • Provide assessment and treatment of children’s fine motor skills, gross motor skills, visual perception, sensory integration and other component skills and the analysis of the impact any difficulties will have on their ability to carry out every day activities 
  • Recommend specialist equipment and housing modifications to ensure independence and safety at home and school for children with physical disabilities and challenging behaviour

 

Referrals

Referrals may be made by a GP or other health, education or social care professionals who are involved with the child and concerned about their development. Referrals must be accompanied by supporting information.

 

Opening hours

Monday to Friday from 9.00am – 5.00pm. Before and after school visits can be arranged if necessary.

 

Response times

The longest wait from referral to first appointment is 4 weeks at present. Urgent cases such as hospital discharges are typically seen within 2 weeks, but pre-discharge hospital visits can be made to ensure smooth transition from hospital to home.
