Your pharmacist provides a wide range of services. Certain
services such as dispensing prescriptions, the disposal of unwanted
medicines, and support for people wanting to give up smoking, are
provided from all pharmacies.
Pharmacists can also provide support for those people that are
suffering from a minor ailment, such as a cold or a cough, through
the Pharmacy First scheme. If you do not normally pay a
prescription charge, the minor ailment remedies will be provided to
you free of charge.
Pharmacies also provide a repeat dispensing service, a facility
whereby patients can obtain their medicines in a more convenient
way, reducing visits to the GP practice to collect
prescriptions.
If you have a long-term condition such as diabetes or asthma,
pharmacists can also advise, and support you, in managing your
condition. Some pharmacies also provide a medicines use review
service, which is an opportunity for patients to ask questions
about their medicines, and for the pharmacist to check how they are
being used.
Many pharmacies also provide a diabetes screening service. So if
you suspect that you might have this condition why not speak to
your local pharmacist?
Pharmacists also offer advice and support around sexual health.
A large number of pharmacies can supply emergency hormonal
contraception (‘the morning after pill’), provide Chlamydia and
Gonorrhoea screening kits, and treat people that test positive for
Chlamydia
